Chapter 6
When Fiona woke from her long but restful nap, it was dusk outside. She realized she had slept the entire day away. She reached back behind her, but he wasn’t there. She heard someone in the kitchen, and the smell was amazing. She got up and wrapped her robe around her, and went to seek out the smell. Asher stood in the middle of her kitchen wearing a tank and jeans. Fiona knew Asher didn’t have any extra clothes there, then she realized he had been home. She had driven his single cab truck home the night before, and there weren't any clothes in there. She walked over to the kitchen bar, and she sat down.
“Well, sleeping beauty is awake.” Asher leaned over to kiss Fiona; she then leaned back and frowned. She covered her mouth and told him she needed to brush her teeth.
“I don’t give a damn about that; I want your lips on mine right now.” He demanded. She still frowned and didn’t ease up.
“Keep your mouth closed then.” He told her. She sighed and then leaned over towards him. They kissed, and Asher didn’t mind Fiona’s bad breath. Asher wanted Fiona anyway he could get her. Fiona had never met a man like Asher, and she loved that about him. Fiona pulled back first then Asher licked his lips. Fiona smiled at him.
“There she is.” He mocked the grinning Fiona.
“Go shower and get dressed my little sister will be here in an hour.” He told her getting back to his cooking.
“But I’m hungry.” She told him. Asher smiled back at her, went to her flatware drawer and pulled out a fork. He opened the fridge and pulled out a bowl; he spooned out a few spoonful’s of the bowl's contents into a saucer. He sprinkled some feta cheese on top and handed it to Fiona. She took the first bite and was surprised by the wonderful flavors. Fiona could taste cucumbers, red onions, tomatoes, feta cheese and some herb dressing. Fiona thought all the flavors were fantastic together.
“What is this?”
“Cucumber salad.”
“It’s amazing!”
“It’s only like five ingredients.”
“But they are really good ingredients” Fiona smiled up at Asher. The look on Asher’s face made Fiona stop chewing. She swallowed slowly and then she took in a deep breath.
“I love you, Fiona,” He told her with no emotion in his face. Asher was trying to be as serious as possible. Fiona said nothing back to him. Asher waited patiently for something from her but the reaction he longed for never came. Fiona’s eyes left his struggled trance. She laid her fork down on the saucer and then stepped down from the bar seat. She turned and walked away from the very patient but now the heartbroken man at the counter. Fiona went into her bedroom and locked the door behind her. Asher dropped his head, squeezed his eyes shut and stood there leaning over the sink for a few minutes.
After an eternity of silence between the two of them, the buzzing ring at the door made the very awkwardly couple eyes finally meet.
